Frost & Sullivan's 2006 Technology Innovation Award Goes To Aethlon Medical; Company's Medical Defense Fills Void in the War Against Bio-Terrorism
SAN DIEGO, Feb 15, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Aethlon Medical, Inc. (OTCBB:AEMD), a pioneer in developing therapeutic devices for infectious disease, announced today that it is the recipient of the 2006 Technology Innovation Award in the field of Biodefense Technologies for Homeland Security. The International Award is presented by Frost & Sullivan, a global market trend research organization. It acknowledges Aethlon's development of the inventive Hemopurifier™ technology, which can be deployed as the first line of defense against a broad spectrum of drug and vaccine resistant pathogens.
The Technology Innovation Award is presented each year to a company that has carried out new research that has resulted in innovation(s) that have or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. The Award is based on over four hundred hours of market research, and recognizes the quality and depth of a company's research and development program as well as the vision and risk taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavor.
James A. Joyce, Aethlon's Chairman & CEO, stated, "We are honored to receive this recognition, and appreciate that analysts at Frost & Sullivan recognize the importance of treatment countermeasures whose mechanism of action offers the potential to treat a broad spectrum of bio-terror agents." "These same treatment attributes will also be crucial in combating emerging pandemic threats such as the H5N1 strain of Avian Flu," concluded Joyce.
According to Frost & Sullivan, there has been a huge lapse in the development of effective drug or vaccine countermeasures for diseases caused due to biological warfare and emerging pandemic issues. Currently, many biotechnology companies are working on identifying methods to innovate technologies to deliver solutions that address this urgent requirement, and at the forefront of this trend is Aethlon Medical. The Company has established its competence in developing viral filtration technologies that can clear drug- and vaccine-resistant pathogens from blood circulation. The technology can also be deployed against currently untreatable pathogens released through bioterrorism.
"This technology can filter diverse pathogens including Smallpox, Ebola, Marburg and Anthrax toxins, and is based on the fundamental principles of affinity chromatography and hemodialysis that enable the identification, isolation and removal of the viruses prior to cell and organ infection," says Frost & Sullivan research analyst Haritha Ramachandran. "The technology can also identify and eliminate genetically modified envelope viruses and can be targeted for use against chronic conditions such as HIV and Hepatitis-C."
Frost & Sullivan reports that the Hemopurifier™ is based on a two-stage process to reduce toxins in the body. The first stage involves the separation of viruses and viral toxins from blood using established techniques, similar to those employed in blood dialysis. The second part involves the immobilization of affinity agents that bind tightly to glycoproteins that reside on the envelope of viruses. The Hemopurifier™ concept may be the only technology that effectively rids a virus from the blood/medium where it has been detected. Due to this unique feature, the Hemopurifier appears best positioned to treat patients when conventional drugs or vaccines are not effective or are not readily available.
"With several key patents already filed and several more pending, Aethlon Medical has successfully established a robust research and development program," notes Haritha. "Through a productive R&D effort, promising products, and strategic alliances, Aethlon Medical is poised to leave an indelible mark in the field."
About Aethlon Medical
Aethlon Medical is developing the first medical device to treat infectious disease. The device, known as the Hemopurifier™, is a broad-spectrum treatment countermeasure against drug and vaccine resistant bioweapons, naturally evolving pandemic threats such as H5N1 Avian Flu, and chronic infectious disease targets including Hepatitis-C (HCV) and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
